How To Install A Dual Flush Toilet

Installing a dual flush toilet is relatively straightforward and once in place will drastically reduce the amount of water you use in your bathroom.

Basically, the installation of this type of toilet is the same as for a low flush loo, and while it’s undoubtedly easier to just get a plumber round, if you do fancy taking on the task then it should be more than possible.

Before you make a start, though, read through the following overview so you have an idea of the process – and always read and follow the instructions that come with your particular loo, as each model will be installed in a slightly different way.

Preparations

Firstly measure the area where the new toilet will go as you want to make sure the replacement fits in the same space. Check the distance from the wall behind to the bolts that fix the loo to the floor, and make note of the diameter and base shape.

Once you have bought the dual flush toilet, switch off the water supply and empty the current loo by flushing repeatedly – if some water remains you may need to hire a special hoover to suck this up.

Remove the old

To take out your current loo, disconnect the supply hose to the loo and the tank from the bowl, and take out the floor bolts and any other bolts to remove the toilet. It’s a good idea to put some waterproof sheets down in the bathroom and hallway as taking the old loo outside can be messy.

Install the new

Clean up any old wax and place the new wax ring according to instructions. Install the adaptor to the fitting that connects to the drain, called the closet flange, and put the toilet in place by fixing any bolts. Install the rubber gasket on the outlet of the new water tank and insert screws and washers before linking the tank and bowl using bolts. Then connect the supply hose and place some silicon seal around the base. Turn the water back on and install the loo seat.

Of course, this may all seem a little too tricky and you might want to get your local plumber round. However, regardless of how you decide to install your new loo, you should shop around initially for ideas on the model you want – after all you may want it to match the sink and possibly some bathroom furniture also. This sanitaryware collection has lots of different makes to consider, including compact ones.
