5 Shower Head Types

Shower enclosures come in a great range of shapes, sizes and styles – and so do shower heads. Choosing the one you want will largely come down to personal preference but may also be dictated by space and the overall appearance of your bathroom.

Naturally you’ll want a shower head that’s in keeping with the rest of the shower. If your shower is compact and contemporary you will probably want a head to match, whereas a traditional enclosure may work best with a more traditional shower head.

In addition to different sizes, shower heads can be fitted in a number of ways and for varying purposes. Some people enjoy a moderate stream of water while others want to feel massaged and refreshed by the shower.

Here are 5 of the most popular types of shower head:

1. Standard

Traditional showers are wall-mounted with the neck movable to angle the direction of spray. Normally the height of the shower head can be adjusted too, by moving it up and down the bar above the main shower body and to which the shower nozzle and hose are attached to. This is a good option for families or couples – houses full of people of different heights.

2. Ceiling mounted

With this type of shower, you stand directly under the head which can be installed flush into the ceiling or hanging a little lower depending on ceiling height. This option can work quite well with showers over a bath tub as it keeps the look of the device cleaner and clutter-free.

3. Handheld

This shower has a longer hose that can be held and directed where you wish. Spray the water over your head to wash your hair or move the shower head lower to reach the corners of the shower enclosure during cleaning.

4. Multiple

Multiple shower heads are fitted so that spray is released from several points. Heads can be fitted in rows or even on opposite sides for a relaxing experience. It’s even possible to create a sense of spa with enough water jets placed vertically from your knees to your neck.

5. Water saving

The design of the shower head impacts on how much water you use when you shower. If you want to ensure you don’t waste too much water, there are water-saving shower heads available which alert you when you’ve used a certain amount.
