Spring clean your bathroom

Now that spring is around the corner, that means the inevitable spruce up after Christmas and before the summer in the popular “Spring Cleaning” session we all seem to have the urge to do.  Every room is important but in particular the bathroom is more important on a par with the kitchen, but the kitchen gets a once over every day as we are cooking in that constantly and cleaning it down on a daily/regular basis.  We don’t often really get in and deep clean the bathroom as often!

First of all, gear yourself up with thick rubber gloves (washing up ones to protect your hands), clean cloths and scouring sponges, cif or any other bathroom cleaner, bleach, paper towel and new polishing cloth/s.  Next, put aside at least 1 – 2 hours to do the job properly.

If you have a shower or bath/shower and have curtains, wash these in bleach to get off any dirt and/or mould.  This builds up on walls, tiles and the shower curtains!  So, if you wash your shower curtains usually, this time bleach them to kill any mould and/or germs that gather over time.  If they are really stained, treat yourself to new curtains.  I have curtains and I replace them at least 3 or 4 times a year.  Completely cover the bath in your cleaning agent/bleach and leave it to “soak in” for at least 10 minutes and wash it down, repeat on the basin and inside the loo.  Leave bleach to soak in the loo and then scrub with the brush to get off any stains and/or lime scale.  This always does the trick for me!

De-clutter!  All empty bottles of all lotions and potions get rid of them!  Once you have wiped everything down, make sure you get around and under the taps and in the grouting, I have found that mould annoyingly gathers there!

Finally, to give the bathroom those final touches, polish the taps so they shine and impress everyone with the dusters, a rub over with a duster on the taps and over the mirror makes all the difference.  Using newspaper on the windows and mirrors also makes them shine (you can also use vinegar to give a good shine on these).  And to keep your bathroom smelling fresh place a few air fresheners around the bathroom in discreet places (under the basin or in/behind the bin).  A small plant on a window sill out of the way will create oxygen and naturally deodorise your bathroom, but one that flowers will give an even better smell, hyacinth is a good one with a lovely, fresh fragrance.

It is important to clean the bathroom regularly as not only does it mould/dirt look unsightly, mould spores can be dangerous and can start asthma and/or exacerbates it.
